It’s been 30 years since 38 Special first cracked the top 40 of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart with the driving ‘Hold on Loosely.’

A concert version of that song — plus 14 others from the Southern rock band’s deep catalog — is included on ‘Live From Texas,’ a new album due at the end of August.

Modern, portable technology played a key role in this project, which has been on the band’s radar since fall 2009.

“We were able to carry out our digital recording equipment with us to several cities, and now had our own private studio for remixing,” singer/guitarist Don Barnes explains. “So this was going to be a real pleasure to put together. The crowds were massive, and all of those classic songs deserve a chance to shine in an enhanced live fashion. We were finally able to deliver what we represent onstage.”

Originally, the members of 38 Special wanted to record their concerts and then distribute copies to fans in attendance as souvenirs. But they were so pleased with both the sound and the performances that they decided to make a proper album instead.

Speaking of 38 Special concerts, the band’s current U.S. tour continues into mid-November.
