Absentee Voting to Begin This Week

Absentee voting for the June 28th primary election will get underway this week in Lawton, with polling open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday and again on Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Absentee voting will continue on Saturday at the Comanche County Election Board Office, located on the second floor of the Comanche County Courthouse at Southwest 5th Street and C Avenue. Residents who vote by in-person absentee don't have to state a reason, but they must sign an affidavit stating they will not vote at their precincts on election day. Voters also will have to provide a photo ID or a voter registration card to receive their ballots.

In addition to races including state House and Senate seats, as well as the race for U.S. Senate and House seats (Districts 3 and 4), the primary ballots will include local office elections for nonpartisan Lawton City Council races for Wards 3, 4 and 5. Candidates must receive 50 percent plus one of the total cast in their race to win; otherwise, the top two candidates, in terms of ballots won, will proceed to the general election on Nov. 8. The winners will begin their terms in January 2017.

Election officials also are reminding residents that Independents may vote in the Democratic and Libertarian races only. Republican primary ballots are restricted to registered Republicans.
