Andrew Garfield Meets Twitter Wrath After Saying He’s Gay Without ‘Physical Act’
Andrew Garfield‘s gay fans are likely in shorter supply after the actor made some controversial comments in which he claimed to be gay “without the physical act.”
In preparation for a new adaptation of Angels in America, Garfield told Britain’s Gay Times that he’s been trying to get into character by watching a whole lot of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
“My only time off during rehearsals — every Sunday I would have eight friends over, and we would just watch Ru. This is my life outside of this play,” Garfield said. “I am a gay man right now, just without the physical act — that’s all.”
“As far as I know, I am not a gay man,” he added. “Maybe I’ll have an awakening later in my life, which I’m sure will be wonderful and I’ll get to explore that part of the garden, but right now I’m secluded to my area, which is wonderful as well. I adore it, but a big concern was what right do I have to play this wonderful gay role? It was about doing honor, doing justice and knowing my herstory.”
Understandably, many Twitter users found the remarks reductive of the gay community and opportunistic.

In January, Garfield participated in some explicitly physical gay activity when he kissed Ryan Reynolds at the 2017 Golden Globes.
He later told The Late Show: “I just wanted Ryan to know that I loved him no matter whether he won or lost,” he said. “It doesn’t matter. It’s how you play the game. He showed up and gave his all. It doesn’t change anything in my heart.”
Oh and then he kissed Stephen Colbert.
