When it comes to making “true story” movies, there’s always a certain sense of pressure on everyone involved to be as true to the real events as the movie allows. That’s what Mark Wahlberg and co. were most concerned with when it came to making Patriots Day, but it appears their attempt to “do it right” still left some people in the dust. Now, Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s widow Katherine Russell says that the movie’s portrayal of her is unjust and “unfair.”
Tracking movie trailer views can’t be an easy task, as you have to somehow combine everything from TV views to YouTube views to all-kinds-of-other-places views and calculate some sort of number from all of that. Previously, the record has been held by The Force Awakens, which was dethroned by Fifty Shades Darker earlier this fall, which was then whipped by the live-action Beauty and the Beast trailer (probably the most anticipated live-action Disney movie ever). Now, The Fate of the Furious is king, with 139 million views in its first 24 hours, more than 10 million more than Beauty and the Beast.
Kate McKinnon has officially stepped into the shoes of all the SNL stars before her who went from TV to movies at lightning speed. After this summer’s Ghostbusters, McKinnon has Office Christmas Party coming up this weekend, and today it was announced that she will be playing the titular spellcaster in Amblin’s adaptation of The Lunch Witch.
Who watches the Baywatchmen? All of us, okay. We are all going to be watching the Baywatch movie, because, still, none of us can believe it actually exists. It must be seen. It must be experienced. And if you’re just dying to know what we’re all in for, look no further than this teaser Dwayne Johnson posted on his Twitter today, and stay tuned for tomorrow’s first trailer.
Much like the Golden Globes is considered “the fun one” of all the Hollywood awards ceremonies, Sundance is “the fun one” of American film festivals. It’s where celebrities old and new can rub shoulders with directors, critics, production agents, cinematographers, and everyone in between at the largest independent film festival on U.S. soil. Today, the Sundance Institute announced the lineup for the 2017 festival, and there are a ton of possible future gems on the list.
If you’re a fan of Black Dynamite or Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, you’ll probably want to check out the new streaming service Brown Sugar to see where Hollywood’s blaxploitation era got its start. The Brown Sugar app launched today, and it’s the go-to service for all the classic blaxploitation films like Shaft, Foxy Brown, Blacula, and Cleopatra Jones, if you can dig it.
Remember that movie about the murders of Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur that Johnny Depp is in, for some reason? Depp is playing a detective who tries (and, obviously, fails) to crack both cases, and Forest Whitaker has just joined the cast as Depp’s journalist buddy who is also interested to find out what actually happened to the hip hop icons.
If you know Luc Besson, you know he never shies away from being as nutso with his movies as possible. 1997’s The Fifth Element proved he wasn’t at all averse to making adventurous sci-fi as strange and wonderful as possible, which gives us plenty of reasons to be excited for his upcoming Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Another one of those reasons is Rihanna, who is going to have a small role in the movie, and whose look has been revealed in preparation for the first Valerian teaser to drop tomorrow.
When you think of Santa Claus, what do you think of? Fur-lined red coats? Red- and green-wrapped presents? Cookies left out by the fireplace? A successful decade-and-half-long standup comedy and acting career working with the likes of Judd Apatow, Ice Cube, and Dwayne Johnson? If it’s that last one, first of all, really? Second of all, you’re in luck, because professional standup comedian and actor Kevin Hart is in talks to play Santa Claus in Disney’s Dashing Through the Snow.
Sony’s CG/live action hybrid Peter Rabbit movie has been quietly gathering a pretty high-profile cast, and today it looks like they’ve found another actor to voice something cute and fuzzy: Margot Robbie is currently in talks to lend her vocal talents to the modern adaptation of the Beatrix Potter classic.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens underwent a bunch of reshoots, as is the norm for blockbusters these days, and while, at the time, those reshoots were mostly kept a mystery, now some news has come out about one key scene in particular. Apparently J.J. Abrams and Ava DuVernay are good friends (who knew??) and frequently trade footage and screeners back and forth to one another to get some notes and suggestions. And one very important scene in The Force Awakens probably would not have been as cool without DuVernay’s guiding hand.
