If you’ve seen Showgirls then you know that the cast of the film had to do some pretty racy stuff: Stripping, sex scenes, and more. But did you know that the one scene that made the actors truly uncomfortable was an unlikely one: The monkey scene. Apparently the animal actors in the scene wouldn’t stop staring at the cast’s naked breasts, freaking them all out. That’s just one of the dazzling facts featured in the newest episode of You Think You Know Movies!
Okay, so it was one of the worst summer movie seasons in recent memory. Trying to find the good blockbusters amongst the last four months releases sometimes felt like trying to find a needle in a stack of s---. But even this year there were diamonds in the rough. Today we’re celebrating the ten best, the summer movies of 2016 that didn’t make us weep for the future of cinema — and note that this list is just movies that got wide releases in at least 500 theaters. We’ll have a separate piece on under-the-radar summer films you might have missed next week on ScreenCrush. In the meantime, let’s celebrate the highlights from a depressing summer before we clear the decks and get ready for the fall.
We’ve already picked the best movies of 2016 so far. But with just nine titles across our two lists, that left out a lot of great performances and movies and surprises from the year that was (not to mention the worst movies and crushing disappointments). Before we start looking ahead to the rest of the year, let’s give out some awards for the stuff we loved (and hated) from January to June. It’ll be fun! Even if we don’t know what to call these things. (The Crushies? The Screeners?) Whatever they’re called, here they are:
This summer, after a 27 year hiatus, Ghostbusters is returning to the big screen with the Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig led reboot. Also this summer, after a 15-year hiatus, Ghostbusters is returning to store shelves in the form of the classic 80s juice drink Hi-C Ecto Cooler...
We’re a little unsure as to the origins of this clip (UPDATE: it’s a secret bonus feature on the exclusive Target version of the Force Awakens DVD and Blu-ray), but it starts with The Force Awakens star John Boyega beatboxing while Daisy Ridley freestyles some sick Star Wars verses...
Not sure if you heard, but a little movie called Batman vs. Supermancomes out next week. You probably don’t need much in the way of convincing at this point; As divisive as the movie has been, you’re either with it or against it at this point...
Just when you thought Syfy Original Movies couldn’t get any weirder, we present to you Dead 7. On its surface, it’s just your normal, cheapo movie from the creators of Sharknado about zombies in a post-apocalyptic western town...
Last October, to commemorate the day Marty McFly traveled to in the future in Back to the Future, Part II, Nike and Michael J. Fox officially debuted the Air Mag, the self-lacing sneakers promised to us in the film. At the time, Fox had the only functional pair (he showed them off on Jimmy Kimmel Live) and there was a promise that the technology would become publicly available in 2016. Well, it’s 2016, where are our self-lacing sneakers?! Today, Nike debuted a new video of their self-lacing shoes in action, plus some more details.
