Lawton Public School District Superintendent Tom Deighan went in front of the Lawton Board of Education Monday night, to update the board on the current status of bond projects dating back to 2004 and 2014, while also discussing progress toward another proposed bond initiative.

Dieghan reported to the board that a majority of the projects from those bonds have been completed, or are in the finishing stages of completion. These projects include central air and heating repairs and upgrades and at 25 schools in the district, new roofs at 29 district facilities, repairs to fencing and barriers across the district, window upgrades at 4 locations, and 11 gymnasiums and improvements to the parking lot at Eisenhower High School. The board went on to approve noon on March 8 at the Shoemaker Center for the sale of the $4.47 million general obligation bonds consisting of a combined issue of $3.82 million of building bonds and $650,000 of transportation equipment bonds. The combined purpose bonds were authorized during the April 1, 2014 election.

According to a recent survey of principals, staff and parents, conducted by Aspire Higher Education and Leadership, the top priorities for future bonds include Classroom support (instruction technology, supplies and equipment), facility support (improvements, additions and upgrades) and student safety (tornado shelters).
