Since the very first time I took David to South Dakota to visit family, he’s wanted to “experience” the Sturgis Rally.  We are finally going to be able to check that off our ‘bucket list’.  We are on our way to Sturgis for the 2013 Sturgis Rally.  This year is the 73rd Annual Sturgis Rally. As I mention this to David he said “We should have waited and come to the 75th!”  Really?

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is the largest motorcycle rally in the United States, maybe even the world! Riders come from all over the world to participate in the week long event that is held the first full week of August. I found it interesting that the city of Sturgis will earn approximately $800 Million from the rally but had to purchase the rights to their own name. I guess you can put up with a lot of people once a year for a short week or two if it puts that kind of money into the annual city budget.

Local residents rent out their homes, their yards, their pastures and whatever else they can to the many riders that come in to camp for the week. My sister and her husband rented their home out one year.  They were a group of Investment Bankers from South Africa.  Although they paid a nice price to rent the house for the week, my sister decided that once was enough.

We have decided we have to experience 4 things while we are there.
