Cop Who Sang to Baby After Dad Died in Car Crash Will Break Your Heart
They say police are supposed to protect and to serve. You can add “comfort” to that list.
A photo featuring a police officer in Brighton, Colo. singing to a two-year-old girl after she survived a car crash last week that claimed the life of her father has gone viral and touched everyone who's seen it.
The girl was in the car with her parents and three other kids when a tire blew out, killing the man and injuring the mother and three of the children. Officials handed the two-year-old girl to an officer, Nick Struck – a father of a two-year-old daughter himself -- who explained what he did to keep the girl calm:
She was crying. She was soaked in gasoline from the truck. The smells were awful. My daughter, who’s the sweetest thing in the world when she falls down and cries, she wants ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ sung to her. So this girl, I was singing ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ and pointing to the lights in the fire truck."
A witness named Jessica Matrious happened to take a photo of Struck with the girl and it has since touched a nerve after it was posted online.
Struck said, “When you hear that there's children involved, "I'll tell you what, everyone that responds to that scene, you get that pit in your stomach. The first thing we do when we get on scene is we just try to, if we can comfort anybody, of course we're going to go to the kids."
