Since making her debut with Warner Bros. Records in 2015, London-based alt-pop singer Dua Lipa has been making waves — nay, a tsunami — with her infectious brand of humid, hazy electro-pop. Her voice brimming with soul and her music gleaming with moody synths, the scintillating English-Albanian singer-songwriter has garnered comparisons to other indie-songstresses-turned-pop divas, from Jess Glynne to Alessia Cara to Jessie Ware.

Like any emergent musical force worth listening to, Dua hit up Austin's SXSW on March 18, where she stopped by the festival's ever-popular Hype Hotel showcase to claim a new flock of would-be fans. There, while performing at the Cruel Rhythm Showcase sponsored by Mazda and Hype Machine, the sultry songbird closed her set with "Be the One," her tropical late 2015 single.

Swaying across the stage, the smoky-voiced 20-year-old performed the sunny synth-pop jam, effortlessly coaxing the audience to bounce and sing along with her. Crooning, "Oh baby come on, let me get to know you / Just another chance so that I can show / That I won't let you down," Dua's lyrics seemed to reflect her introduction to the SXSW crowd with prophetic relevancy.

After being called a "pop star in waiting" by BBC, and "the next big pop star" by Forbes, only one question remains: Can Dua Lipa live up to all the hype? Our prediction: We bet she'll be the one to do it.
