Election Day Tradition in a Small Town

Pancakes served all day
Clay Miller

There are some things that will never change. For example, the first Tuesday in November is election day.

This year, there was no local, state or national election in my home town. However that did not stop the annual pancake feed. As long as I can remember, The pancakes were cooked at the Stephens County Fairgounds by members of the Kiwanis Club of Duncan.

A couple of years ago with membership declining, the club made a decision that was not all too easy.  It was time to let the annual pancacke feed go. Sure it was a great way to rasie money for scholarships and other community projects. But it takes an army of people to feed the crowds that showed up year after year.

Who could fill the shoes? The First United Methodist Men’s Group stepped up to the plate and said we cannot let this Dunca tradition fade away.

Yesterday starting at 7am, the first group of hungry Duncanites made their way in the church and were welcomed by the smells of bacon, sausage, coffee and pancakes all waiting to be devoured.

All day long groups of people came and went. Lots of people used this time to get caught up on what has been going on. You may say why do it this way? With smart phones and email, why visit at a pancake feed? That is what people in Duncan do. They use these opportunities to sit and talk face to face.

The Kiwanis Club as I said, did it for so many years and usually a crowd of 2200 to 2500 on average would eat in a twelve hour day. FUMC is keeping up that tradition in a great way.  They plan on using the monies raised to go towards aftershool programs, Gabriel’s House, two community meals at The Well, the Backpack for Food program and community outreach.

I am glad I live in a small town that has a community event like this.
