Elton John recently had an appendectomy that forced him to postpone much of his summer tour. But since his new album 'The Diving Board' will be released later this month, the legendary singer-songwriter didn't want to go totally silent. So he'll make his first appearance ever at the Emmy Awards in a couple of weeks.

In honor of 'Behind the Candelabra,' the HBO biopic about Liberace that's up for 15 trophies, John will perform a tribute to the late pianist (whose flamboyant style surely influenced John). Actors Michael Douglas and Matt Damon -- who are both nominated for their roles in the movie -- are scheduled to present during the annual telecast.

CBS will air the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 22, with Neil Patrick Harris hosting.
