The New ‘Power Rangers’ Try Their Hand at Catalogue Modeling in First Cast Photo
Is this the first cast photo from the upcoming Power Rangers movie, or is this promoting the new juniors line in the latest Macy’s catalogue? The only proof we have of the former (aside from its debut in Entertainment Weekly) is the absence of a caption telling us how to get Trini’s cool grunge look.
The first photo from Dean Israelite’s Power Rangers has arrived, though Lionsgate insists the film is actually titled Saban’s Power Rangers — and to be fair, that sounds like it could be a clothing line (or producer / creator Haim Saban’s personal army of robot cheerleaders). The cast features RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Dacre Montgomery as Jason the Red Ranger, Becky G (Empire) as Trini the Yellow Ranger, Naomi Scott (The 33) as Kimberly the Pink Ranger and Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zack the Black Ranger. Elizabeth Banks co-stars as the villainous Rita Repulsa in the new film, which centers on a group of teens “chosen by destiny” to protect their town of Angel Grove (and the world) from an impending alien attack. It’s the same basic setup as the classic Power Rangers series, though Israelite says the film differs in that it takes a contemporary look at today’s “disenfranchised and disparate” teens. The diverse group will have to overcome their differences if they want to save the world.
Speaking of diversity, Israelite says it was “very important,” and they swapped some of the character ethnicities and assignments around. As he explains, “We switched all of the races around, but we made sure that the essence of each of those characters are who they were in the original show, and this really will be an origin story of those characters.”
While the first official production image doesn’t show off the team’s power-suits, we can expect something a bit different and updated for the film. Weta Workshop, best known for their work on The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films, has created a new line of upgraded suits.
Power Rangers hits theaters on March 24, 2017.
