Full ‘Foxcatcher’ Trailer: The Dark Side of Steve Carell
As director Bennett Miller said, the whole premise behind 'Foxcatcher' -- that of a disturbed millionaire coaching a team of Olympic wrestling hopefuls at his home without knowing a thing about the sport -- was "funny...until it's not, and then it's not funny at all." Following the film's NYFF debut, a new 'Foxcatcher' trailer premiered online to show off the powerhouse performances from Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo, and provide a full-length look at this early Oscar contender.
'Foxcatcher' takes its name from the estate of John du Pont, an heir to the du Pont family fortune who became obsessed with wrestling, particularly two sibling athletes hoping to become Olympians. John lures the first brother, Mark (Tatum), to his home to live and train with the promise of money and giving America hope again. As the honeymoon phase comes and goes, John turns his attention to Mark's brother, David (Ruffalo), who's become a promising wrestling coach. Things take a tragic turn when John, after the weight of his mother's death accelerates his mental breakdown, drives to David's house on his estate and shoots him on the front lawn.
Like Miller's earlier works ('Capote' and 'Moneyball'), 'Foxcatcher' is based on a true story. Having already seen the film, we were blown away by the actors' onscreen transformations, with specific regards to Carell as the mentally disturbed du Pont. His portrayal was made even more intense by the actor's physical flourishes and makeup. Come Oscar time, we're interested to see how it will stand up against the likes of 'The Imitation Game' and 'The Theory of Everything,' two other awards hopefuls that hit the film festival rounds alongside 'Foxcatcher.'
The film will hit theaters on November 14.
