When the 59th Grammy Awards roll around in February 2017, there's no chance Frank Ocean will walk away with an award, and that's exactly how he's planned it, he told The New York Times in a new interview.

Ocean, whose Channel Orange earned six Grammy nominations upon its 2012 release (it won two), said he intentionally withheld his new Blonde from future Grammy consideration after becoming disillusioned with the awards show process. He said that only a handful of black artists have won Album of the Year since his 1987 birth is proof the system is stuck in yesteryear, and that he's content watching the next show from the sidelines.

"I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated,” he said. “I’d rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience."

Ocean acknowledged he once sought out dreamy opportunities like awards show performances, but the novelty has worn off now that he's been in the public eye for a few years. Still, he's not dismissed the Grammys completely.

"That institution certainly has nostalgic importance,” he said. “It just doesn’t seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down."
