In November, a CEO in New York named Peter Shankman realized he had a bunch of frequent-flyer miles built up. But instead of squirrelling them away, he wrote a blog post about how he was going to give away six free plane tickets to people who wanted to fly home for the holidays, but couldn't afford to.

Then other people heard about it, and decided to do the same. JetBlue also pitched in 10 free tickets, so now a total of 25 people are getting free tickets home. Sunday night, Peter had stopped accepting requests, and he was in the process of choosing the 25 most-worthy candidates.

Another prime example on how some individuals want to pay it forward. Sure he could have done anything he wanted. Flown anywhere he wanted. But in the spirit of the season, several people will have the opportunity to see family and friends. For some, it may be the first time in a long time they have had to chance to do so.

If you had the means to do so, would you pay it forward like Peter Shankman is doing?
