This coming Monday, August 1, marks 40 years since George Harrison and some famous friends performed the Concert for Bangladesh, and the anniversary is being celebrated with digital downloads, a month dedicated to charitable giving and free streams of the ‘Concert for Bangladesh’ movie.

The 1971 concert, held at New York’s Madison Square Garden, raised money for the people of Bangladesh ravaged by floods, famine and civil war. The bill included Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Ravi Shankar, Leon Russell, Billy Preston and Harrison’s former Beatles bandmate Ringo Starr.

The ‘Concert for Bangladesh’ album just debuted on iTunes with some extras — the 1971 single “Bangla Desh” is a bonus track, and a video trailer for the album and a radio show about the concert are both available as free streams.  The ‘Concert for Bangladesh’ movie will stream free in its entirety this Saturday through Monday via iTunes, GeorgeHarrison.com and TheConcertForBangladesh.com.

UNICEF is marking the anniversary by declaring August as a “Month of Giving.” All month long, donations to the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF will benefit children in the Horn of Africa suffering from drought and famine.  Itunes will donate after-tax proceeds from the sale of the ‘Concert for Bangladesh’ album to the fund.
