Just before most people were ready to sneak off into the night to toast the new year, Disney and Marvel released their 2014 preview. It was mostly full of stuff we'd already seen (remember those 'Captain America 2' pics from the other day?) with one notable exception: our first official look at 'Guardians of the Galaxy.'

Up until now, the best we've seen of James Gunn's upcoming Marvel movie was a bunch of concept art. That and the bootlegs of the Comic-Con footage. Now, we have a hi-res image of the entire team: Gamora, Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Drax and Groot.

This is a shot seen at the very end of the Comic-Con trailer, as the heroes are in a criminal lineup of sorts for Nova Corps officers John C. Reilly and Peter Serafinowicz. In the trailer, Reilly sizes them up and says, "They call themselves the 'Guardians of the Galaxy'" to which Serafinowicz's officer replies, "What a bunch of a--holes."

It's a great moment in the trailer and sets up the team as a ragtag, Bad News Bears-y group of heroes, instead of a team like The Avengers.

In addition to the first photo, Marvel has released the official plot synopsis for the film:

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team--the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits--Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon; Groot, a tree-like humanoid; the deadly and enigmatic Gamora; and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand--with the galaxy's fate in the balance.

'Guardians of the Galaxy' - which also stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Glenn Close, Michael Rooker and features the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel - doesn't hit theaters until August 1, so sadly we're still a ways off, but here's hoping we get that trailer online in an official capacity sooner rather than later.
