This week, Star Wars: The Force Awakens will pass $2 billion in box office sales.  That's pretty nuts and it's easy to see why it is at the number one spot in box office dominance.  BUT -- it's not the whole story.

If you compare what a dollar did 20, 30 or 50 years ago and what it does today, the moving picture moves pretty significantly.  Adjusted for inflation -- the biggest box office successes would look more like this:

  1. Gone With the Wind (1939)
  2. Star Wars (1977)
  3. The Sound of Music (1965)
  4. E.T. (1982)
  5. Titanic (1997)
  6. The Ten Commandments (1956)
  7. Jaws (1975)
  8. Doctor Zhivago (1965)
  9. the Exorcist (1973)
  10. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

Our newest installment of Star Wars would come in at number 15 on this list.  But still, the 15th biggest movie in the history of the universe?  Still not bad, right?
