Lady Gaga Reveals She Suffers From PTSD on ‘Today’
Lady Gaga opened up about struggling with mental illness during an interview on Today earlier this morning (December 5).
The Joanne singer made a visit to New York City’s Ali Forney Center -- a shelter geared toward homeless LGBTQ youth -- as part of Today's #ShareKindness campaign, where she revealed she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.
"I don’t have the same kinds of issues that you have, but I have a mental illness and I struggle with that mental illness every day," she said during the segment. "My own trauma in my own life has helped me to understand the trauma of others.”
She continued, saying, "I suffer from PTSD. I've never told anyone that before, so here we are."
Gaga -- who revealed during a 2014 interview with Howard Stern that she was raped at the age of 19 -- went on to note the importance of kindness and empathy, and says receiving emotional support from her friends and family has helped her face the trauma she struggles with daily.
"The kindness that's been shown to me, by doctors as well as my family and my friends, it's really saved my life," she said. "I've been searching for ways to heal myself, and I've found that kindness is the best way.”
The "Perfect Illusion" singer posted a video of the segment to Twitter, writing, "Today I shared one my deepest secrets w/ the world. Secrets keep you sick w/ shame." Check it out above.
