Fort Sill firefighters were dispatched to the Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area on post at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday for a possible drowning.

The preliminary investigation shows two soldiers were on the water in a one-person kayak when the craft became unbalanced and flipped. Witnesses told investigators the probable victim panicked as the other individual tried to help him to shore. One person was able to make it out of the water. Witnesses said the victim submerged and never resurfaced.

The area of LETRA where the incident happened is 60-100 feet deep. The Lawton Police Department and the Wichita Falls Police Dive Teams, along with an Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lake Unit boat, are aiding in the search for the victim.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
