While it’s likely that Queen’s Freddie Mercury wasn’t drawing inspiration from salty snacks when he wrote ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ back in 1979, the song from the band’s 1980 release ‘The Game’ has recently been tapped by Lays potato chips for their latest television spot.

The peppy little commercial stars actress Louise Griffiths. Griffiths, who’s appearances include episodes of the TV shows ‘CSI’ and ‘NCIS,’ has also appeared in ads for Fancy Feast cat food and Dannon yogurt.

The new commercial shows her falling in love with a freshly opened bag of Lays chips, while the Queen opus plays in the background. With the theme “One taste and you’re in love,” the clip strikes up a love story between the leading lady and her tasty snack.

This isn’t the first time ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ was used in a marketing campaign. In 1999 a Dwight Yoakam cover of the song was used by The Gap and it’s also been used in food commercials in Canada and Italy.

Classic rock tunes seem to be becoming more and more prevalent in modern marketing, look no further than Honda tapping Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘Crazy Train’ for a car commercial.

Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ has a long rap sheet for being transformed and tweaked for commercials as well, the latest being ad for the Cosmopolitan Casino in Las Vegas earlier this year.

While many classic rock and Queen enthusiasts may find the use of this classic tune in such a commercial way a bit blasphemous, there’s always an upside – someone, somewhere, is being turned on to Queen and the magic of Freddie Mercury for the very first time whenever the commercial plays. So, as Freddie Mercury sang best, the show must go on!
