Make Your Own Laundry Detergent & Save $300 a Year!
For the last year, we've been making our own laundry detergent. It sounds nuts, but it is so easy and works like a dream. We calculated that our laundry detergent for one year cost $6.55. We've washed over 550 loads for that money. It only takes a little time and the results are just as good as the $15 detergents!
Here's what you need:
- 2-3 Gallon Jugs (heavier plastic than milk cartons works best -- but in a pinch a milk carton will do).
- Borax detergent
- Washing Soda (look for Arm and Hammer in the laundry aisle)
- Bar Soap (we got a six-pack of dye-free and allergy-free soap for about $1).
In large pot that holds over 2 gallons, grate the bar of soap into pot. Pour 1 gallon of warm water over the soap. Stir over heat till the soap melts.
Add Borax and washing soda. Increase heat and bring to a boil.
Turn off the heat and add 1 gallon cold water. Stir well.
Cool slightly then pour into jars using a funnel. Let cool for 24 hours before use.
It may gel slightly. That is normal. Just shake it before use.
