Marriage Isn’t For You, Or Me!
A friend recently sent me a blog post with the title "Marriage Isn't For You" and my first reaction was "WELL! How dare they! They don't know me! I adore my husband." But the stubbornness in me decided to read the story and I am so glad I did! I loved it so much I want to share it with you.
I am on my second marriage but this is the first marriage for my husband David. I was very young the first time I got married and I married for all the wrong reasons. Had I waited and understood that "Marriage Isn't For Me" it may have had a different outcome.
As I read the blog something really stood out...It was where the writer, Seth Adam Smith, stated that one fateful night he shared his thoughts about marriage with his Dad. His Dad's reply is what really knocked me in the head! If everyone thought this way maybe we wouldn't have so many failed marriages. Here is what his father said
“Seth, you’re being totally selfish. So I’m going to make this really simple: marriage isn’t for you. You don’t marry to make yourself happy, you marry to make someone else happy. More than that, your marriage isn’t for yourself, you’re marrying for a family. Not just for the in-laws and all of that nonsense, but for your future children. Who do you want to help you raise them? Who do you want to influence them? Marriage isn’t for you. It’s not about you. Marriage is about the person you married.”
Seth goes on to say "My father’s advice was both shocking and revelatory. It went against the grain of today’s “Walmart philosophy”, which is if it doesn't make you happy, you can take it back and get a new one."
I wanted to share this story with you because I think it is eye opening and enlightening! It may even be life changing for some. Most of us agree that our society is rapidly, yes I'm going to say it, going to hell in a handbasket! We need to get back to the basics. Love the one we are with and teach our children respect!
