Oklahoma City Zoo’s Asian Elephant ‘Asha’ Is Expecting Second Calf
Oklahoma City Zoo officials have announced that their 18-year-old Asian Elephant Asha, is expecting her second calf.
Zoo veterinarians conducted a blood hormone analysis and used ultrasound to check and make sure that Asha was indeed pregnant and sure enough the tests results were positive. Zoo officials estimate that the expecting mother is seven months pregnant.
However, with elephants being pregnant for that long is actually still considered 'the early stages of pregnancy.'
The zoo states that elephants have a gestation period of 22 months so the bouncy baby is not expected to enter the world until December 2014.
Asha's first baby calf, Malee was born on April, 15, 2011 weighing 304 pounds.
Asha has been in the Oklahoma City zoo since 1998.
