Paul McCartney is among those mourning the death of actor Victor Spinetti, who passed away Tuesday morning at the age of 82 after a bout with cancer. Spinetti starred in three films by the Beatles.

The singer stated, “Victor was a fine man, a great pal and a fantastic actor and someone I am proud to have known for many years. His irreverent wit and exuberant personality will remain in my memory forever. I will miss his loyal friendship, as will all the others who were lucky enough to know and love the wonderful Mr. Spinetti.”

The BBC reports that McCartney and Spinetti first struck up their friendship on the set of the film ‘A Hard Day’s Night.’ The actor would go on to star in over 30 movies total, including the Beatles’ ‘A Hard Day’s Night,’ ‘Help!’ and ‘Magical Mystery Tour.’ In his latter years, Spinetti was more known for his work on London’s West End as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company. He also teamed with John Lennon to turn the Beatles book, ‘In His Own Write,’ into a stage production.
