Surprise — Paramount has delayed the release date of their upcoming sequel to The Ring yet again, marking the third time that the studio has assigned a new release date to Rings, following a series of shifts for their long-developing Friday the 13th reboot / sequel / who-knows-what-it-is-anymore. Rings will now hit theaters this October…supposedly, maybe, possibly, we’ll see.

Deadline has a brief update on the status of Rings, reporting that Paramount has shifted the release date for the third installment in the horror series to October 28, where it will contend with Lionsgate’s untitled horror film. That film appears to be the new horror project from You’re Next and The Guest duo Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett, and centers on a group of friends who head into the woods and discover they are not alone. (A crazy rumor last year suggested the film may be a Blair Witch reboot or sequel of sorts.)

Whatever the case, Rings will definitely have a bit of competition when it finally hits theaters (if it ever does). Directed by F. Javier Gutierrez (Before the Fall), Rings features another horror story involving the ghastly Samara and her deadly videotapes. Based on a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, Jacob Aaron Estes (The Details) and David Loucka (House at the End of the Street), Rings stars Aimee Teegarden, Johnny Galecki and Alex Roe.
