Sam Smith dropped out last minute from the iHeartRadio Music Festival on Friday night (Sept. 21), releasing a statement on Twitter saying it was due to "unforeseen circumstances which transpired after rehearsal." This left fans wondering what happened to the singer. Fortunately, Smith shared an update on Instagram, revealing that he was having issues with his vocal cords, but is now on the mend.

This isn't the first time the singer has had issues with his vocal cords. Back in 2015, Smith underwent vocal cord surgery after suffering a vocal cord hemorrhage and had to remain silent for three weeks post-surgery. Thankfully, this time it isn't as serious. But Smith has decided to take it easy until his upcoming Asia tour.

Having issues with vocal cords is a problem that many of the biggest pop stars encounter throughout their career. This summer, SZA had to pull out of her awaited TDE Championship tour due to swollen vocal cords, prompting her to write since-deleted tweets where she claimed her voice was "permanently injured." Last year, Adele also had to cancel her remaining tour dates after damaging her vocal cords during the first two nights of her sold-out four-night residency at Wembley Stadium.
