It's been nearly four months since we last heard from Selena Gomez. In that time, she's sought treatment for her mental health struggles; worked on self-care, and celebrated "20wineteen" with her bestie Taylor Swift. On Monday (January 14), the pop star broke her social media hiatus to wish fans a happy new year and reflect on the challenges she faced in 2018.

"It’s been awhile since you have heard from me, but I wanted to wish everyone a happy new year and to thank you for your love and support," the 26-year-old wrote alongside a series of black and white selfies. "Last year was definitely a year of self-reflection, challenges and growth. It’s always those challenges which show you who you are and what you are capable of overcoming. Trust me, it’s not easy, but I am proud of the person I am becoming and look forward to the year ahead. Love you all."

Last year, Gomez underwent a kidney transplant due to her Lupus diagnosis. The surgery took its toll on the singer, and her mental health struggles were reportedly a byproduct of the complications she endured during the recovery process. She was hospitalized in October and checked out of treatment in December.
