Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers just announced a massive 2012 tour that will take them through the U.S., Canada and much of Europe. The tour will begin in April.

As fans know, the band had previously announced that they would play a headlining slot at the Isle of Wright Festival on Friday, June 22, that will also include performances by Elbow, Noah and the Whale, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

But now Petty and company will also play dates in Ireland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, England, Switzerland, France and Italy. Prior to touring Europe, the band will go to the Great White North — Canada – and perform for the first time in Newfoundland (on June 3) and Nova Scotia (on a date to be announced soon).

Special guests on the tour and more dates will soon be announced.

Although Petty and his band mates haven’t spoken publicly about the tour, the frontman recently told Rolling Stone that he only plays the band’s best known songs to satisfy fans.

“If I wasn’t worrying about that, I probably wouldn’t play any!” said Petty about a week ago. “We just did some shows last weekend at a little place and most of the show we did pretty deep album cuts. I wouldn’t be surprised if that becomes more of the rule than the exception.”

The U.S. tour dates announced so far follow. For more information, go to the band’s website.
