U2 Bassist Adam Clayton’s Former Assistant Found Guilty of Stealing $3.5 Million

U2 bassist Adam Clayton is finally seeing justice in action as his former personal assistant Carol Hawkins has been found guilty of embezzlement.

A Dublin jury ruled in the musician’s favor after evidence was presented that Hawkins had run up a £2.2 million (roughly $3.5 million U.S.) on him. In total, the Dublic Circuit Court jury ruled that Hawkins committed over 181 acts of theft against Clayton over a four-year period.

According to the U.K. Press Association, Judge Patrick McCartan told the jury, “The evidence in this case was overwhelming. Nobody could seriously disagree with the verdict you have given.”

Hawkins first came to work with Clayton as his housekeeper and bookkeeper. The musician then hired her husband as a driver and chef and paid them jointly. After Hawkins split from her husband, the musician continued to pay Hawkins the full amount.

Clayton told the jury that in 2008 Hawkins confessed to booking between £10,500 ( roughly $16,485) and £12,100 (roughly $19,000) in flights between the U.S. and Europe to see her children. It was also documented that she purchased 22 horses, a vehicle for her son, and fashion and film courses for her children while using Clayton’s name to do so.
