Fame isn't always as glamorous as it looks — at least, so goes the story in the trailer for Whitney, an upcoming documentary that chronicles the life, career, and untimely death of Whitney Houston.

The film, helmed by Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland), is the first to be sanctioned by the late icon's estate. It features interviews with her friends and family — including her mother, Cissy, ex-husband Bobby Brown, and collaborator Clive Davis — as well as unreleased recordings, never-before-seen home videos, and live performances.

“You have three places to sing from: the heart, the mind, and guts. She learned them all," Cissy remembers of her daughter in the two-minute clip.

But for as much as the movie celebrates the legacy Houston left behind, it also reveals the dark side of stardom she weathered behind scenes.

"All the things coming at her, she just wanted to escape the pressure," a family member shares in voiceover. And, says the singer herself in rare, intimate footage, "People think it's so easy. It's not."

Houston, who broke more records than any other female singer, was found dead at 48 in a hotel bathtub in 2012. Upon arriving at the scene, police found multiple bottles of prescription medication and loose pills around the room.

Her death was later ruled an accidental drowning, with heart disease and cocaine use also cited as partial causes. In August 2012, her autopsy showed she had marijuana, Xanax, Benadryl, and other medication in her system.

Whitney is the second documentary about Houston to be released in recent years, following 2017's Whitney: Can I Be Me. It hits theaters July 6.
