Now that growing season is winding down in Oklahoma, it's time start prepping for next year! Fall is the best time of year in Oklahoma to plant native perennials. These beautiful flowers and plants are native to Oklahoma and are beneficial to pollinators.

According to Okies for Monarchs, the reason fall is the perfect time to plant native perennials is because of the cooler temperatures and warm soil. So now is a great time to start clearing out those gardens and sourcing your perennials for planting!

What native perennials should you plant in Oklahoma?

Right now, the monarchs are getting ready to do their fall migration through Oklahoma. The state is one of the few states where monarchs migrate through during the spring and fall. Over the years, the monarch population has drastically decreased, and one of the reasons is because their food sources have become less and less available.

One of the ways Oklahoma residents can help rebuild the monarch population is by planting native perennials that are a food source for monarchs. Okies for Monarchs has a handy list of 12 perennials that are perfect to plant for monarchs across the state.

  • Butterflyweed
  • Green Milkweed
  • Golden Crownbeard
  • Purple Coneflower
  • Indian Blanket
  • Beebalm
  • Basket-Flower
  • Maximillian Sunflower
  • Blazing Star
  • Aromatic Aster
  • Showy Goldenrod
  • Blue Sage

Oklahoma's Beneficial Insects

Not all insects are pests! There are some insects that are beneficial to you and your garden. In a study by the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service on beneficial insects, "most insects found in yards, gardens or crops do not feed on or harm plants. Many are just 'passing through' or have very innocuous habits. Others feed on and destroy pest species. In many cases, the activities of these beneficial species can prevent or greatly limit pest problems."
