In 2000, Lawton community members and civic organizations opened Kid's Zone at Greer Park. The playground featured a giant wooden structure for kids to play one. At the front of it was hundreds of tiles featuring handprints of local children. So when the City of Lawton announced earlier this year that they would be revamping Kid's Zone, many community members were concerned about the tiles.

A majority of the tiles from 25 years ago were saved and are to be added back to the new playground, but about 25 tiles were broken and unable to be repaired. So the City of Lawton partnered with local art studio, A Pigment of Your Imagination, and is offering Lawton residents an opportunity to be a part of Kid's Zone once again.

Paint tiles for Kid's Zone at A Pigment of Your Imagination on July 2.

From 2-6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2, Lawton residents can visit A Pigment of Your Imagination, located at 10 NW Sheridan Road, to purchase a tile and paint it to be placed at Kid's Zone. The tiles are $25 each and that includes installation of the tile. Each tile will feature the child's name, handprint, date and age.

A Pigment of Your Imagination is donating its own supplies, paints, glazing and firing for the project. More information is available on the Facebook event page from A Pigment of Your Imagination.

Kid's Zone is expected to open mid-June.

The City of Lawton began deconstructing Kid's Zone in March of this year. According to a press release from the City of Lawton, the deconstruction only included the play unit within the park to allow for resurfacing and construction of the new Kid's Zone. The tiles and brick dedications were preserved during this process and will remain in the same place when Kid's Zone reopens.

According to an article from the Southwest Ledger, the new Kid's Zone will feature upgraded playground equipment, a splash pad, zip lines and other amenities. Other renovations at Greer Park include the restrooms, tennis court fencing and the walking trail, and new installations of lights and security cameras.

The City of Lawton anticipates Kid's Zone to re-open in mid-June.

Oklahoma's Best 4th of July Celebrations

There's nothing like celebrating America's independence in the heartland, and Oklahoma practically overflows with patriotism across the state. While most towns have their own celebrations, some are larger than others. Since it would be hard to catch all of them in one day, they're spread out a bit over two and a half weeks, pick one or more and let your American flag fly.
