The forecast looks extremely good for the next few days across Oklahoma. It's unseasonably nice outside for now, but the worst of tornado season is in the extended forecast.

At the moment, while the wettest portions of the state are enjoying a little repreive over the next couple of days, there are some pop-up storms happening in other portions of the state.

Hardly any of them are "severe" by any metric, but they are producing what meteorologists call "cold air funnels."

They're technically tornadoes, but because of their cooler nature and lack of rotation, they very rarely ever reach the ground.

For any rainstorm passing over Oklahoma in May, we'll take it.

All the same, when the godsend Omega-block weather pattern finally moves on, it's back to normal across the Sooner State. Big wind, big hail, and tornadoes.

Some are putting OK-D-Day mid-May, others are pushing it out an additional week or so, but the term everyone seems to be using is not inspiring confidence.

The Death Ridge.

What is that? It's a big, stubborn bubble of high pressure in the atmosphere that blocks storms and keeps hot, dry air stuck in one place for a long time. It's the opposite of the Omega Block we're experiencing right now.

Instead of a pair of low-pressure systems locking the high pressure, it'll be two high-pressure systems blocking low pressure up the Great Plains.

It's predicted to happen over the American Southwest, which means Oklahoma is going to be ground-zero for a very active period of time until the death ridge moves on.

Big storms, rains, hail, and tornadoes.

It's still too far out to nail down exactly when this weather system is going to happen, but just about every big-city meteorologist in Oklahoma is talking about it.

Odd and Unbelievable Tornado Facts

As far as we've come in the technology surrounding severe weather and tornadoes, there's still a massive amount science still doesn't understand. Yes, there is a generally agreed idea of how they begin, the conditions needed, and the usual atmospheric conditions, but twisters are still wildly unpredictable. Even more fascinating are the strange and almost terrifying facts about these powerful displays of nature.
