Throughout college football, there are only a handful of absolute truths each and every year.

  1. Notre Dame is always oversold because they play in a joke conference.
  2. Iowa State can be garbage and still manage to wreck someone's season.
  3. People hate Alabama because they've been so good for so long. Nobody likes a winner.
  4. The University of Oklahoma is the hardest school to coach in College Football.

Nobody argues the Notre Dame thing, though sometimes they have a good team. Iowa State is the bane of Big12 teams. They've wrecked more perfect seasons than any other team in college football... and yes, OU is the hardest school to coach at, mainly due to the often toxic fanbase.

I'm not speaking of fans who show up game after game, accepting the excitement and efforts even when they don't come out on top... It's the fans that call for the heads of the coaching staff after a lackluster performance.

While Sooner fans have disavowed this practice in years past, it's the loudest fans that get heard the loudest, and the whole college football world is eyeing OU with curious expectations going into their first real taste of the SEC this Saturday.

The first few games of any season are generally a chipshot. Usually two or three Division II teams to get things started, work out the kinks, get the play-calling and bugs worked out... but that hasn't happened for OU yet this year. It didn't happen last year either, which is expected any time you swap out a coaching staff, but the Sooner base called for heads to roll then too.

Facing Tennessee this weekend - who is a heavy favorite against OU - the honeymoon could be ending for Brent Venables - head coach of the Sooners.

In a twist of irony that isn't missed by anyone in Sooner Nation, the last person to lead OU to a national title might be the man to drive nails into Venables coffin - National Champion Sooner QB Josh Heupel - who now coaches Tennessee.

If the Sooners do end up on top when the clock runs down, it might be the upset of the season. At least for week four I suppose... but if things go according to the script every sports writer has laid before us, it's going to be a long weekend and season for Sooner fans as they hop off the proverbial bandwagon demanding change.

It's not the only big game in Oklahoma this weekend.

Oklahoma State is set to welcome Utah on Saturday, and OSU is once again the underdog in the fight.

All the same, when OSU loses, Cowboy fans generally hit social media with things like "Get 'em next time Gundy" or "Great effort Pokes"... which probably sounds alien to Sooner nation. Who props up a team with encouragement after an embarrassing loss?

Go Pokes!
