Celebrate National Lemon Juice Day by Making Real Oklahoma Lemonade
So today is National Lemon Juice Day, and while most outlets are speaking up on the home hacks you can do with lemon juice--dishes, laundry, hair dye, etc...--it's a really good excuse to share with you Grandma's recipe for making real Oklahoma lemonade.
You'll find no Country Time here.
No disrespect to the time-honored tradition of Country Time, but that's mixing lemonade... not making.
Instead, you'll see learn a deeper appreciation for how our grandparents passed the time back in the days before cable TV. Grandma spent a lot of time in the kitchen everyday, as was the norm for her generation, and making real lemonade seems pretty involved, but it doesn't take that long and tastes nigh and day different from what you're used to.
You'll need lots of lemons.
Not only will you need the lemon juice, you'll actually need a lot of the rind as well. A little zest, a few peels, some sugar, water, and heat is all it takes.
I looked everywhere to see if Ree Drummond or famed chef Kent Rollins had made lemonade for YouTube, but this one was the only thing I could find that perfectly matched Grandma's recipe. It's a little work, but one taste and it'll ruin drink mixes for you from now on.
