All top quality pop — and all co-penned by the very same songwriter: Brett McLaughlin, better known as Leland.

The skyrocketing songwriter is steadily making a name for himself in the studio working with a variety of major pop acts behind-the-scenes, but — much like another one of today's industry go-to penners, Julia Michaels — he's got his own thing going on, too.

With his latest single, "Mattress," Leland provides proof that he's capable of carrying a track entirely on his own. What he's perhaps less good at? Taking it from the friend zone to the bedroom.

“'Mattress' is about having that one friend who you wish was more than a friend," he explains.

"You don’t say anything because you don’t want to f--k up the friendship but seeing them with someone else hurts like hell."

Relatable.

The Allie X co-penned song, which has already racked up an impressive combined 2 million streams since its debut lat elast month, has already gotten plenty of love from both famous friends like Troye and Daya and newfound fans alike. (Even Barb from Stranger Things gave it her seal of approval.)

For Leland, "Mattress" was also a critical moment in terms of carving out his own artistic persona: "[It] was one of the first songs where it was obvious to me that I couldn’t give it away," he says. "It came so easily because it was real to me. I’m glad I held on to it.”

Today (Aug. 8), we're premiering the lyric video for the track right here on PopCrush, which you can now watch below.

But wait, there's more: a "Mattress" remix is coming later this month featuring a special surprise guest. Stay tuned...

For more, check out Leland on Twitter and Facebook. You can also catch him live on the road: he'll be opening for Allie X on August 22 in San Francisco.
