Oklahoma is probably best known for its plains. At least that's what most people think of when you talk about the Sooner State. However, we have some of the most diverse and widely varying land types in the Nation.

Sure we have plains, but we also have swamps, deserts, mountains, forests, salt plains, and just about every other kind of land type around. Oklahoma has all kinds of landforms, not just the plains we're best known for.

A lot of people, especially those who don't live here or have ever visited assume Oklahoma is flat and looks like one big gigantic prairie. Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, we have sections of the state that are a part of the Great Plains and rolling hills, but depending on where you go that changes.

There's the Great Salt Plains Park in Northern Oklahoma, near Jet, OK. in Alfalfa Co. It's an incredible place and you can even go crystal hunting from early Spring to mid Fall. It's also home to the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge which has some of the very best bird watching around. For more information click here.

Smithsonian also covered the toxic ghost town of Picher, OK. located in the far Northeast corner of the state in Ottawa, County. The town has areas that are completely filled with chat or mine tails that contain dangerous amounts of Lead, Zinc, and other metals.
