Wichita Mountains

If like me you're bored to death and looking for something, anything to do I may have a solution. The family and I were sitting around trying to think of an activity we can all do together and that doesn't cost too much, even better if it's free! Well after we starting listing "things to do" hiking came up and everyone agreed we'd hit the trails. It's the perfect weekend activity and will get us all outdoors and moving!

The Holy City of the Wichitas could be closing due to financial challenges. The Holy City operates and is open thanks to donations from visitors and of course a lot of those visitors come for the annual Easter pageant "The Price of Peace." With the COVID-19 pandemic last year the pageant was delayed and was only lightly attended unlike years past. This has caused serious issues and has jeopardized the Holy City's future.

This past weekend the family and I where looking for something to do so we decided to take a little trip to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. It's been awhile since we've been out there, plus the weather was perfect for a quick hike and picnic. Before we hit the road we checked the TravelOK app to plan our attack and we even found some new places we've never visited before.

We're finally gonna get some live music this Labor Day weekend in Medicine Park, OK. with the 2020 Mayor's Blues Ball. Three full days of great blues music, cool vendors, delicious food and incredible scenery. it's just what the doctor ordered!

While our humble Wichita Mountains often catch rolling eyes, it's still a great thing to see people out in nature, living up the beauty SWOK has to offer.

While it's hard to tell on film, the fall yellows and oranges are starting to finally show up in the Wichita's. Within the next week or two, it should be prime for driving.

As we expected, the last week of cool overnight temps and sunshiny days have the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge changing into its Autumn tux.

Not knowing what the camera was, they started barking at it. It was a cool moment.

Experience Oklahoma’s American Indian History via the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge with Jimmy W. Arterberry, Comanche scholar, historian, artist and Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Comanche Nation. Participants will experience the refuge by taking part in a lecture with journaling/sketching field trip.

What better way to experience the Wichita Mountains online, than in professional pure HD... There Really is a Ton of Beauty in Our Backyard!

As Winter begins to tighten its grasp on Lawton - Fort Sill, the best thing you can do is get out and enjoy the coming cool days in the mountains. Even if it's only for a quick drive through the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and the Association of Friends of the Wichitas will be conducting "Fall Foliage Walks” on November 9 and 16.  Interpreters take participants for a one-mile walk through a forested canyon.  Participants will enjoy the chance to view the autumn colors of red, yellow, orange and brown as leaves begin to change with the season.
