Roger Waters, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones Score Grammy Nominations
The nominees for the 58th annual Grammy Awards have been announced, and the classic rock contingent includes nods toward recent releases and reissues from Roger Waters, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones.
Rapper Kendrick Lamar led the overall field with 11 nominations, while pop acts Taylor Swift and the Weeknd each pulled in seven apiece. But a number of rock acts received honors too — including Waters, whose Amused to Death reissue was nominated for Best Surround Sound Album, and whose recent concert film The Wall was nominated for Best Music Video/Film.
Also picking up multiple nominations were the Foo Fighters, whose Sonic Highways album and HBO series was honored on the audio as well as visual front: the album track "Something from Nothing" is among the nominees for Best Rock Performance, while the Sonic Highways series will compete with The Wall for Best Music Video/Film.
Elsewhere on the classic rock spectrum, Patti Smith earned a nomination in the Best Spoken Word Album category for her work as the narrator for the audiobook version of the Jo Nesbo bestseller Blood On Snow. This marks new territory for Smith, who'd previously only narrated her own writing for the audio version of her National Book Award-winning Just Kids. James Taylor also earned a nod in the Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical category for his latest release, Before This World.
On the reissue front, the Rolling Stones picked up a Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package nomination for the Super Deluxe Edition of their Sticky Fingers reissue, as did the Grateful Dead for their 80-disc live box, 30 Trips Around the Sun. Joni Mitchell, meanwhile, earned a nomination for the liner notes of her latest box set, Love Has Many Faces: A Quartet, a Ballet, Waiting to Be Danced.
Last but certainly not least, Dylan earned a nomination in the Best Historical Album category for The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11, the six-disc set that collects more than 130 songs Dylan worked on with the Band during the summer and early fall of 1967.
Ultimate Classic Rock congratulates all the nominees for the 2016 Grammy Awards, which are scheduled to be held Feb. 15, 2016 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. For more information and to read a complete list of nominees, visit the Grammy website.
