Oklahoma is home to several military installations, including Fort Sill. Instead of spending the holidays with their own friends and family, many choose to stay put for whatever reason.

In an effort to give trainees a chance to explore Oklahoma and feel a little less lonely during the holidays, the Adopt-A-Soldier program has returned for Christmas. Until November 28, 2025, select individuals can invite a trainee out for the holidays.

Here's what you need to know about Fort Sill's 434th Field Artillery Brigade Adopt-A-Soldier program.

What requirements must you have in order to Adopt-A-Soldier?

Unfortunately, not just anyone can adopt a soldier through the program. Applicants can be active duty soldiers, Army National Guard soldiers, Government civilians, or military retirees.

Applicants, also known as sponsors, can live both on and off post, as far as the Elgin and Fletcher metro areas. Don't let the Oklahoma hospitality go overboard, as trainees are unable to accept gifts in value over $20, including those combined with meals and hospitality, according to the application.

The program isn't only for one soldier. Sponsors will be asked to host a "Battle Buddy Team" of two to four Initial Entry Trainees (IET) Soldiers on Christmas Day.

What does a day with a soldier through the program look like?

Sponsors will be able to pick up their trainees after a briefing on Christmas Day. Since trainees are still bound by the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), they are unable to participate in activities like drinking, driving recreational and motorized vehicles, and consuming tobacco.

Although some people are worried that simply staying home and sitting around doesn't seem appealing for trainees, many soldiers who've previously experienced the program praised the opportunity.

Rather than sitting on their phones in the barracks or in a bay, they would rather have the chance to meet and celebrate with other families. According to social media posts, something as simple as playing board games and watching football can make a world of difference for trainees.

How can you adopt a soldier this Christmas?

If you want to sponsor a soldier, simply fill out the application using the QR code on the flyer from the Fort Sill Exchange.

Sponsors will need to pick up their trainees at 10:00 a.m. on Christmas Day and drop them back off on post no later than 7:00 p.m. the same day. For more information, contact SGT Preston, Edward at edward.c.preston3.mil@army.mil or CH (MAJ) Snyder, Jeremiah at jereiah.d.snyder6.mil@army.mil.
