‘American Crime Story’ Finds Its Donatella Versace in Penelope Cruz
We already knew that Lady Gaga won't be playing Donatella Versace in American Crime Story Season 3, but now we know who will: Oscar winner Penelope Cruz will portray the fashion executive and designer on Ryan Murphy's series, People confirmed.
Cruz joins previously-cast Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez as Gianni Versace and Darren Criss — a star of earlier Ryan Murphy show Glee — as Gianni's murderer Andrew Cunanan.
The Versace-focused American Crime Story season will center around the 1997 death of Gianna Versace, who was shot on the doorstep of his Miami home. It will be based on the book Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History. The true-crime book was written by Vanity Fair’s Maureen Orth, who was already covering other crimes Cunanan was suspected of committing before he killed Versace; Cunanan is believed to have murdered at least five people.
American Crime Story won't be back until 2018, however. It will first return with a Hurricane Katrina-themed season which, according to FX Networks CEO John Landgraf, was pushed back so production could avoid the actual hurricane season in New Orleans. But both this and the Versace American Crime Story season will air "within like six months of each other," Landgraf said.
