The Oklahoma City Zoo is kicking off their annual Animal Awareness Days on Saturday, May 3 with a special event to highlight birds and the bird conservation movement. This is just one of several awareness events meant to highlight specific species that the zoo cares for and how Oklahomans can help play a part in their programs.

Up until October 2025, the Oklahoma City Zoo will be hosting special events featuring giraffes, cats, elephants and more. Each awareness day will usually come with presentations and maybe even some goodies there at the zoo.

In order to keep up with all of the dates and information from the zoo, follow their website here and their social media here.

Oklahoma City Zoo’s Bird Awareness Day & Bird Friendly Coffee

Between 9:30 a.m. and noon on Saturday, May 3, the Oklahoma City Zoo will be trying to fit a ton of activities and need-to-know facts about the bird conservation into a very short amount of time. All morning, experts will be showing guests how they care for both the animals in the zoo and the birds naturally found in Oklahoma.

There will also be "interactive education stations, special animal enrichment activities, caretaker chats, and a digital scavenger safari throughout Raptor Ridge, Lakeside Grottos, and the Children’s Zoo presented by Primrose Schools—all part of the morning’s activities, free with regular Zoo admission," according to the OKC Zoo.

As guests walk into the park on May 3, they will receive a free water bottle courtesy of Shape Your Future, a program of TSET, while supplies last. There will also be samples of Bird Friendly Coffee® available in the Zoo’s Safari Gift shop during the event.

This year, the Zoo is aiming to help shed light on the rapid decline of birds in North America due to habitat loss, building collisions, predation from domesticated cats an d exotic pet trade. According to OKC Zoo experts, "North American bird populations are declining at an alarming rate, dropping almost 30% in the last 55 years." At the Awareness event, the Zoo's specialists will be able to give guests ideas on how they can help at home.
