Oklahoma: Where The Game Comes Before The Town’s Halloween

It's no secret Oklahoma is obsessed with football. Countless surveys can attest to the fact that College Football is king around here, even above the NFL. Sure, it's nice to sport your favorite national team. But there's a special kind of spot in our hearts for our very own Sooners and Cowboys (depending on where you come from).

But before college football, the support always starts in the stands at high school games. Some of our small towns could give larger cities a run for their money when it comes to sportsmanship.

This is especially true this year for Elgin, Oklahoma since it seems that the Mayor is struggling with a difficult choice. Now, it's up to the Elgin community to figure out which comes first: Halloween or a game to defend the High School Football State Championship title?

Elgin, Oklahoma Owls win first ever State Championship in 2024.

While the state championship is a big deal for any hometown team, it's especially important to Elgin for the fact that this game was the first ever in the school's history. Their game against Tuttle, Oklahoma last year marked their first ever state championship, just a year after they had transitioned to being considered a 5A school.

If you've seen this team compete in person, you know how passionately they care for the game and their legacy. You can also see just how proud the entire town of Elgin is of their students.

Although no one wants their kids to miss out on Halloween this year, they also don't want to see these hardworking students miss out on defending their state title. As the Mayor of Elgin, JJ Francais, wrote on his Facebook page:

"This isn't just football, but cheer, the Owlets and the award-winning Pride of Elgin Bands and Boosters." So now, the town has a decision to make.

The Elgin Community is deciding when to host Halloween in 2025.

Halloween falls on Friday, October 31 this year. Unfortunately, it is the same day that the Elgin owls compete against the Clinton Tornadoes in Clinton.

The Mayor suggested that Halloween be moved to Thursday, October 30. Other community members are saying they would rather have Halloween moved to Saturday, November 1.

He is currently taking more comments on his post, printing them off and preparing to present them to the city council to vote on the issue.
