Elgin has been growing exponentially since the 2000s, with a noticable uptick near 2009 and 2010. The growing community has been steadily increasing over the years, but the geographical size of the town hasn't changed much. Since the town had a small population in the early 2000s, the one way street was able to maneuver traffic just fine.
But since more people have been moving to Elgin, the traffic flow has gotten more difficult to keep moving. The recent addition of turning lanes near the newly added Braums store and wider shoulders help, but the third lane addition will be much more beneficial.
Third Driving Lane Construction Starting Next Week in Elgin, Oklahoma
The Mayor of Elgin, JJ Franscais, notified the southwest Oklahoma community via Facebook that construction for the third lane should start on Feb. 17. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) will be overseeing and funding the addition since the main road through Elgin is considered Highway 277.
"ODOT put in incentives for early completion and heavy LDs for going over deadline," he wrote on his public Facebook page. LDs are considered penalties for not meeting a contracted deadline, as explained by Franscais in the comments. The Mayor explained that the ideal deadline for the construction to be completed would be within three to five months.
Construction On Several Roads in Southwest Oklahoma
Unfortunately, while construction is happening in Elgin, drivers should expect traffic to be slow and safe for construction workers to do their jobs. The alternate route to Elgin via Trail road is also going to be under construction at the same time. So travelers in the area will not be able to avoid construction.
Drivers should plan accordingly and refrain from speeding, abide by basic driving laws and pay close attention to the roads - do not use phones or other devices while driving.
