Winners For One of The Rarest Opportunities in Lawton Announced
Deer and elk hunting season is so close we can taste it. Unlike deer, elk can only be hunted in Oklahoma if you have a tag. Take a look at the winners for the recent tag drawing in Lawton, Oklahoma.
Winners Announced
This year for Lawton's Elk Hunt drawing, there were over 300 applications and only 10 winners. Although the drawing is for the Lawton hunt, anyone in Oklahoma with a hunting could apply - all it took was an application and $25.
The city of Lawton drew the winners on September 18 and announced them earlier today.
Even though there were significantly more applicants from out of town, half of the winners drawn were from L-town. Other winners came from Fort Cobb, Choctaw, Enid, Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
How The Drawing Works
From the city of Lawton, the drawing is an annual opportunity they hold just before the elk hunting season starts. The drawing is "conducted essentially by pulling a number from a hat," they said on their Facebook page.
Winners are selected at random to have the ability to hunt elk on 1,400 acres of land on the west side of Lake Lawtonka. Hunters are only allowed to hunt during their specific times they won in the drawing, either between October 10-13, 2024 or December 19-22, 2024.
If $25 sounds cheap for a rare opportunity, just keep in mind: that's only the application fee. Winners have to pay an additional $75 for a special Elk Hunting Permit if they're selected from the drawing.
They must all also attend a mandatory pre-hunt meeting to go over important regulations, rules and other information the day before the hunt.
Do You Have To Have A Tag To Hunt Elk in Oklahoma?
Absolutely. When it comes to controlled hunts and special hunts for big game, things become more strict with the state, so it's important to read up on regulations regarding what you're hunting.
