Significant Changes For Oklahoma Food Stamps In 2026
After a hectic year, Oklahomans are already looking to head into 2026 with another curveball involving EBT. For families who use food stamps, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), there will new restrictions on what they can and cannot buy after January 1.
Oklahoma was one of the states that was most affected by the government shutdown earlier this year, in part largely because of the number of families who depend on food stamps. The change will not affect a small part of the state, but in fact, around 17% of the state's population.
Here's what food stamps benefits will cover, and will not cover, for families in Oklahoma in 2026.
Over 680,000 Oklahomans receive government assistance via food stamps.
There's no question that many people who live in Oklahoma rely on SNAP benefits each month to fill their refrigerators. According to usafacts.org, 686,000 Oklahomans receive benefits each month.

The counties that have the most families in Oklahoma that receive benefits are: Adair County, Kiowa, McCurtain, and Harmon counties. Usually, families are able to buy most qualifying groceries with their food stamps. Currently, food stamps covers:
- Fruits, vegetables
- Meat, poultry, and fish
- Dairy products
- Breads and cereals
- Other foods such as snack foods, non-alcoholic beverages
- Seeds and foods, which produce food for the household to eat
As of now, food stamps will not cover alcohol, cigarettes, nicotine products, toiletries, household items, live animals, supplements and vitamins, and even foods that are hot at the point of sale (i.e. fast food).

Because there has been a stress on the options for families to "eat healthier," and other concerns, Oklahoma will have different qualifications for EBT after January 1, 2026.

Most of the qualifications will remain the same as before, but there are two foods and drinks that families will no longer be able to purchase using food stamps. Soft drinks and candy are no longer covered with SNAP benefits.

Snack foods such as baked goods, coffee, unsweetened tea, and certain fruits will not be prohibited from food stamps. But families will not be able to buy hard candies, chocolate bars, carbonated sodas, sports and energy drinks, sweetened teas, lemonades, and even flavored waters with sweeteners.
Government officials are hoping that the change will result in healthier Oklahomans overall. What do you think? Tell us your opinion through the app.
