Gigi Hadid embraced her inner-politician last night (November 21) when she apologized for a completely innocuous impersonation of Melania Trump, wife of President-elect Donald Trump, at the 2016 American Music Awards.

Hadid, who hosted the AMAs with Jay Pharoah, opened the show with an impression of the future First Lady, who was born in Slovenia and has been mocked in the press for allegedly lifting speeches from current first Lady Michelle Obama.

"I love my husband, President Barack Obama," Hadid said with a pinched face in a goof that wound up drawing fire from Trump-supporters on Twitter.

Sensing the backlash, Hadid issued an apology on Twitter in which she swore she hadn't meant any harm, but said sorry if anyone was sincerely offended.

“I was honored to host the AMAs last night and to work with some of the most respected writers in the business,” Hadid wrote. “I removed or changed anything in the script that I felt took the joke too far, and whether or not you choose to see it, what remained was done in good humor and with no bad intent. I too have been the center of a nationally televised comedy skit that poked fun at my actions and was able to find the humor in it. I believe Melania understands show business and the way shows are written and run. I apologize to anyone that I offended and have only the best wishes for our country
