You know that thing that happens when you don't notice something until it's directly related to you?

Like, you don't notice all of the Mazdas on the road until you start driving one, yourself. Or you don't realize how many people actually have red phones until you get a red phone.

The same thing happened to me, recently, when I heard the news that the rain has made it so grassy in Texas that they started using goats to do some of their mowing. The very next day, I noticed this little makeshift pen on the side of the Highway 277 headed towards Elgin, Oklahoma from Porter Hill.

People in Oklahoma have also started to use goats for their weedeating and mowing.

At first, I didn't think much of it, but as I would drive by each day, the pen would be moved a little further away from where it was placed the day before.

That's when I took a closer look and realized that someone was using goats for the grass on the side of the road.

I took a closer look and noticed that all of the goats had collars, were fairly small and extremely friendly. They definitely thought I was there to move them when I got out of the car, so I don't think these are wild, unhandled goats being used for the job.

Who is lending their goats in Oklahoma to come and mow for property owners?

While several people around the state have been asking for goat mowing services, there doesn't seem to be many options available.

There does seem to be one family on the far western border of Oklahoma and Arkansas near Fort Smith that caters to their area of the state, according to Goats On The Go. But after a little research, you can tell there aren't many folks actually offering this service publically.

Sounds like there's a good opportunity to make money for those with goats, a trailer and some electric fencing. But if you happen to have other animals instead of goats, can you do the same work with them?

Can you use other animals to do the same job?

Goats are generally a good option for mowing down areas because of a few things. They aren't so small that it would take a long time to mow down an area, but they aren't large enough to damage the ground they walk on.

They are also generally easy to handle get used to being around people. Sheep and goats are very similar, but many folks opt for goats because of their willingness to eat all kinds of vegetation. They enjoy eating grass and weeds just the same.

Larger animals like horses and cattle have a tendency of trampling the ground, especially if they're kept in a small pen, which is not ideal for them.

So, it all comes down to the GOATS.
