Gwyneth Paltrow Regrets ‘Conscious Uncoupling’ With Chris Martin in Goop
Goop: The place for the latest in home goods, skincare and recipes that will make you the hit of your gated community.
Goop: Maybe not the place to share news with the world that you are divorcing your husband of a decade.
In 2014, Gwyneth Paltrow used her lifestyle site as a means to announce her infamous "conscious uncoupling" with Chris Martin. The term became an unfortunate sensation, and in an interview with LinkedIn that went live this morning (September 7), Paltrow says she regrets the public method through which she came clean about her split.
"It sort of wouldn't be appropriate now," she said. "It is a much bigger business and I'm not sure it would be the right place to do something like that. I'm not sure. That's a good question."
In Paltrow's defense, though, she said the site has changed drastically, and that the Goop of two years ago is certainly not the Goop of 2016.
"At that time, goop wasn't the size that it is now, there were a lot less people," she said. "It was a very, very personal project for a long time and I wrote in the first person all the time, so it wasn't like a break. Now if you read the content, it is not in the first person anymore. At the time, it was still very small and very personal. It was such a difficult time in my life and I was trying so hard to protect my children and my family, Chris included. We were both fragile. It was really tough. To me it felt like this is a quiet way to do this and it is contained."
Paltrow explained in her initial breakup announcement that she and Martin had been working hard at their relationship for a year, but that they decided they'd be better off apart, especially in the context of raising their two children.
"We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner," she wrote.
